Efficient Ambient LoRa Backscatter With On-Off Keying Modulation

Backscatter communication holds potential for ubiquitous and low-cost connectivity among low-power IoT devices. To avoid interference between the carrier signal backscatter signal, recent works propose a frequency-shifting technique to separate these two signals in frequency domain. Such proposals, however, have occupy precious wireless spectrum that is already overcrowded, increase power, cost, complexity of tag. In this paper, we revisit classic ON-OFF Keying (OOK) modulation Aloba, system takes ambient LoRa transmissions as excitation piggybacks in- band OOK modulated over transmissions. Our design enables work same meanwhile achieving flexible data rate at different transmission range. The key contributions Aloba include: i) tag can pick up from other signals; ii) novel decoding algorithm demodulate both their superposition. We further adopt link coding mechanism interleave operation enhance reliability decoding. implement conduct head-to-head comparison with state-of-the-art PLoRa various settings. experiment results show achieve 39.5–199.4 Kbps distances, 10.4– $52.4\times $ higher than PLoRa.
